About — Himalayan Adult Day Care

Himalayan Adult Day Care is a Social Adult Day Care (SADC) program in Elmhurst, Queens. The program is open to all eligible adults, and is culturally and linguistically competent in Tibetan and Himalayan traditions. Staff speak Tibetan, Nepali, and English. The program operates Monday through Wednesday, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

What the status calendar shows

The calendar on the status page shows one thing only: where the program is on a given day — on-site at the program address, off-site for a scheduled community activity, or closed. It is not the daily activity schedule, and it does not show any individual participant's plan. It is published so that program partners, oversight agencies, and visitors can confirm where the program is before travelling to the site. Outings are decided by participants at the beginning of each month, and dates that depend on the weather are confirmed about a week ahead.

Off-site days are community inclusion, not closures

Community inclusion is a required part of the program, not an interruption of it. Under the federal Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Final Rule, participants have the right to integrate into the greater community and to take part in activities outside the program site, with no restriction on receiving services elsewhere. The off-site days shown on the status calendar — park and library visits, temple gatherings, museum and field trips, shopping trips, volunteer work and community service — are scheduled service days delivered in the community. The program is not closed on those days; the service is simply being provided away from the program address.

A structured activity program

Every program day follows its own planned schedule across the activity categories expected of a Social Adult Day Care program: physical activity, social activity, spiritual activity, education, intellectual activity, and community inclusion. Activities are adapted to participants' needs and preferences, and participants may request changes or suggest new activities at any time. Participation in any activity, including spiritual and religious activities, is voluntary.

Person-centered planning

Each participant has a Person-Centered Service Plan recording their own stated goals and preferences and the activities chosen to support them, and each participant leads their own planning process. The program offers group community activities — these are the off-site days shown on the status calendar. Separately, each participant's plan includes community activities individualized to that person's own goals and preferences. Individual plans are confidential and are not published here.

Participant rights

Participants receive and acknowledge a written statement of their rights, consistent with the HCBS Final Rule and New York State Department of Health requirements. These include the right to move freely about the site, to have activities adapted to their needs, to integrate with the wider community, and to be free from abuse, coercion, and discrimination, with personal information kept confidential.

Himalayan Adult Day Care does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, creed, age, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, marital status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, New York State, or New York City law. This applies to admission to the program and to participation in all program activities.
